Clearogen Review

Acne; although not a serious health condition, can severely mar a person's self-confidence and make him/her feel inadequate. It is not unusual for people who suffer from chronic and acute acne to shun social events because they are so ashamed of the blemishes on their face. Fortunately, there are several options available for people who are battling severe acne, from topical preparations to laser interventions.
For most people, their first instinct is to reach for a topical anti acne preparation at the sight of the first zit on their face; unfortunately, a trip to the store reveals that choosing an anti acne cream or gel may not be as easy as it sounds. After all, you only have to pick the right product from amongst a couple of dozen creams and gels all claiming to give you a clear and flawless complexion.
A new product on the market that also promises such results that have all been played over like a broken record is Clearogen. Here is a look at what the product does, how well it works and its pros and cons
What is Clearogen
Clearogen is a topical anti acne preparation from Advanced Skin and Hair Inc; the brainchild of a board certified dermatologist, Alex Khadavi; the manufacturer's claim that Clearogen can:
  • Help to reduce the hype production of sebum (skin oils). The sebaceous glands under the skin go into hyper production mode due to a hormone called testosterone that is normally produced in the body. The manufacturers of Clearogen claim that their product can actually interfere with the conversion of testosterone into dihydro-testosterone, which causes acne. This in turn prevents the sebaceous glands from over producing the natural oils.
  • The impact is apparently further accentuated by the fact that the product also causes the androgen receptors in the body to stop stimulating the sebaceous glands; this again prevents the over secretion of oil.
  • Once the oil secretion is controlled, the product than proceeds to heel existing zits by killing the bacteria, peeling away the dead skin and clearing the pores
The product has been strongly pitched as a better alternative to another popular product in the category called Proactiv.

What does Clearogen actually do?

Like all other topical anti acne preparations, Clearogen also assists in killing the bacteria on the surface of the skin that cause inflammation and the accumulation of puss; it dries the skin to temporarily stop the over production of skin oils that block the pores. Finally, it peels away the dead skin cells on the surface. However, Clearogen does not have such ingredient that would actually interfere with the production or the conversion of testosterone to dihydro testosterone. Very few topical preparations (none of the anti acne creams and lotions) have the ability or are potent enough to hamper the production of a particular hormone in the body.

So, these claims made by Clearogen manufacturers are complete humbug. While benzoyl peroxide is effective in controlling acne in most people, in some patients, it may have adverse effects, aggravating the skin and increasing the intensity of acne and scarring. Also, both benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are not potent enough to control some acute cases of acne where deep cystic inflammation and infection is common.

The positives

  • Its easy to use, has to be applied on the affected area thrice a day
  • Comes as a complete kit of skin care products that includes a foaming cleanser, toner and lotion
  • The manufacturer offers a money back guarantee
  • If you are looking for quick results against pesky zits that seem to appear out of nowhere right before an important social function, Clearogen will work well for you
The negatives
  • At $69, Clearogen is more expensive than the other products in its category
  • Most dermatologist concur that a cleanser and lotion are quite adequate to control acne fthrough topical preparations, so the addition of a tone is not only futile but also a ridiculous attempt to squeeze more money out of the consumer
  • Clearogen contains benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid which makes it no different from any of the other anti acne products in the market
  • These ingredients may aggravate acne in some people
  • It does not contain any ingredients that will miraculously tackle the root cause of acne.
  • Au contraire to what manufacturers would have you believe, Clearogen is clearly inadequate at controlling the production of conversion of testosterone.
The verdict
The product is good if you are looking for quick and temporary reprieve from acne. While you are using Clearogen, you may notice that your skin gets smoother and the intensity of zit appearance may go down. However, the product does not address the root concern of the problem in any way and if you suffer from an acute form of acne, Clearogen may not be able to help you.
