Cystic Acne

Cystic Acne is the most painful and severe form of acne. It is a lot bigger than whiteheads and other pimples and often leads to severe acne marks.This swollen filled pus red pustules which are very visible on the surface of the skin takes long to heal and it really needs to be treated by a skin expert.  

Like the other types of acne, cystic acne is generally caused by overactive oil glands, excess dead skin cells within the hair follicle, susceptibility to infection, and a large number of acne-causing bacteria present. The difference is that with cystic acne, there are hard bumps that occur under the skin which are filled with semi-liquid substance. This develops when there is a deep break in the follicle wall and a membrane grows around the infected area. The blocking up of the sebum glands which leads to inflammation of the surrounding tissues is also one of the main causes of cystic acne. Moreover, this infection could also spread to the surrounding area which would lead to the worsening of the inflammation and the swelling.

The breakout of cystic acne can damage the healthy skin tissues and could result in the scarring of the skin. In treating cystic acne, prescribed medications are often required since this type of acne is difficult to control. In some cases, a doctor may also make use of surgical excision and drainage to treat the problem area. This process involves making a small incision in the sin and extracting the infected material. Some skin doctors also make use of the intralesional corticosteroid injection procedure wherein the medication is injected directly into the lesion to help reduce the inflammation and shrink down the blemish.
