Antibiotics For Treatment of Acne

Bacteria on the skin and under it are one of the causes of acne. Antibiotics work not just by reducing the number of bacteria in and around the follicle. It also reduces the chemicals produced by the white blood cells and diminishes the inflammatory response.

The most common used antibiotics in the treatment if acne are erythromycin, minocycline, doxycycline, tetracycline and clindamycin. Unfortunately, none of these antibiotics is completely safe.  Apart from the risk of developing allergies, using the wrong medicine or failure to comply with any of the precautions may actually exacerbate the condition or cause adverse side effects.

Tetracycline must be taken on an empty stomach. This is a problem for a growing teenage boy who eats frequently. Tetracycline should not be given to pregnant women or children under 9 years of age. Tetracycline appears to hamper fetal bone growth. Erythromycin while safe for pregnant women may cause stomach upset and nausea. Minocycline may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, skin pigmentation changes, and tooth discoloration, the latter two being more common in people who have taken minocycline for a long time. Doxycycline increases sensitivity to the sun and should not be taken on an empty stomach; nausea may ensue. Clindamycin therapy may cause a serious intestinal infection.

Potential Risks Associated With Antibiotics For Treating Acne

When used for a long period of time the bacteria may also develop resistance to antibiotics, rendering acne and any other infection for that matter untreatable by the antibacterial drug that it has developed resistance against. Antibiotics indeed destroy bacteria causing acne but also inadvertently kill the healthy bacteria that are naturally present in your intestines. Any of the above-mentioned antibiotics can also cause candida yeast infections. This happens when the natural balance between bacteria and fungi is upset. You may have been successful in removing acne but inadvertently caused another condition to develop.  

It seems that antibiotics treatment is not as simple as it appears to be. Why run the risk of complications and adverse side effects when there are completely safe methods and natural formulations that can cure all types of acne?
