There are many misconceptions and myths about acne. If you ask someone what causes acne, their response will probably be poor hygiene, poor diet, and stress. We are a group of skin care professionals, and we're going to put an end to some of the most common acne myths.

Myth 1 - Stress Causes Acne

Stress does not directly cause Acne. However, stress can influence and contribute to the acne problem. When you get stressed out, your body produces a substance called Cortisol. Cortisol causes your sebaceous glands to increase production, which can block pores.

Stress can also increase your adrenaline which can slow down the natural sheeding of the outer skin layer. This can lead to clogging pores, which contributes to the causes of acne. So stress doesn't cause acne directly, but it does contribute indirectly to acne by causing the problem to get worse.

Myth 2 - Popping Pimples Is The Easiest Way To Get Rid of Acne

Popping pimples does not fix the acne problem, it only makes it worst. When you pop your pimples, it pushes germs further under your skin. This actually will aggravate an acne condition and can even lead to infection.

Myth 3 - Acne Is Caused By Eating Certain Foods

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about acne. According to scientific studies, eating junk food is not the cause of acne. However, by eating healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, it can improve the health of your skin and help reduce acne. Even though acne isn't caused by eating junk food, it sure doesn't help either.

Myth 4 - Tanning Will Clear Up Acne

Exposure to the sun can dry out existing acne and oil buld up on your skin. However, tanning under the sun will now prevent acne breakouts from coming back for good. Tanning can actually be worse for your acne condition in the long run because too much exposure to the sun can increase the production of your sebaceous glands.

Myth 5 - The Best Acne Treatments Are In Your Local Store

This is a huge myth. Many of the facial products and acne treatments inside your local stores only cleanse the surface of your skin. They don't clean deep enough into your pores, and attack acne at the root of the problem.

Myth 6 - ProActiv Is The Best Acne Treatment Available
