Is There a Differin Difference?

Is There a Differin Difference?

According to its website, Differin is the #1  topical acne medication prescribed by dermatologists.  It works under skin’s surface at the source of the problem.  Differin products are topical retinoids, “the only class of drugs proven to treat those blemishes that are present and prevent the formation of new ones.”
Differin is applied after washing with a separate cleanser.  You dot it on your forehead, cheeks, and chin and spread evenly.  They warn you not to apply more than directed (“more than a dot”) because it will irritate your skin.  Differin’s active ingredient is “adapalene,” which I’ve never seen in any other product.  Adapalene must be a very strong medication if you judge by all the warnings and cautions on the Differin website.
It may take 8-12 weeks (two or three months) for you to notice results from Differin treatment.  Differin is available only by prescription and comes in three forms:  Differin Gel 0.1%, Differin Gel 0.3% (for cases of more severe acne), and Differin Cream 0.1% (for sensitive skin).  Your doctor will determine which you need when he writes your prescription.
Because it’s a prescription medicine, Differin has known side effects which include itching, dryness, redness, burning, or peeling.  Every page on the website has an “Important Safety Warning” message encouraging Differin users to report negative side effects to the Food & Drug Administration.
What do real people say about Differin?  Very good things, as it turns out.  Every review I’ve read says that Differin works well.  Here are a few examples:  “Has worked wonders for my skin,” “It really cleared up my skin,” “Clears skin beautifully!!!!” and “Makes skin soft and smooth.”  I didn’t find a single person who said Differin did not work for them.  So why isn’t everyone using Differin?
Well, there are a few drawbacks.  I mentioned the side effects listed on Differin’s website–itching, dryness, redness, burning, and peeling.  Even the people who gave it such glowing reviews said that it did cause redness, dryness, peeling, and even flaking, especially at first.  A few recommended using a moisturizer, applying the product only ever other night at first, and being careful not to use too much.
Differin has another, perhaps more significant, drawback–its price.  The Differin website doesn’t list a price since the product is available only by prescription, but from my research about real users’ experiences, I’ve figured out that it costs about $165 for a 45 gram tube.  I would estimate that size might last a month and a half if you apply it per their directions.  So the price is very steep!  Of course, if you have insurance coverage you might not have to pay full price.
It sounds like a really good product, but when taking the price and the side effects into consideration, I personally would recommend that you use Exposed acne solution instead.  Exposed also gets excellent reviews from users (myself included), and the price is a fraction of Differin’s.  You won’t need to go to a dermatologist to get Exposed, just order through their website.  You’ll also avoid all the unpleasant side effects but still get the fantastic results of clear, smooth, blemish-free skin.  You don’t have to spend a fortune to get beautiful skin, just get Exposed.
